Drafting Findings and Diagnosis with Walter
When a technician records an assessment, Walter can help in two separate ways. Draft from notes turns the technician's written notes into structured details. Get Diagnosis reads the notes and photos and suggests what the problem may be and what the job may need. Both are drafts. The technician reviews them, and the assessment can be finished without either.
Before you start
- Open the assessment capture page for an assessment that is scheduled or in progress. The Walter tools are in the section headed Diagnose the Problem, marked with a Walter AI badge.
- Write something in Findings detail first. Both Walter buttons stay disabled while that box is empty. This box is the one required field, and Walter never changes it.
- For a diagnosis, add photos with Add Photo if they help. Get Diagnosis waits until photos finish uploading.
- Each Walter request counts against your plan's monthly Walter allowance, shown on the Plan & Usage page.
Steps: Draft from notes
- Type your observations in Findings detail: symptoms, error codes, what you checked, model and serial numbers.
- Select Draft from notes under "Draft structured details from your notes". It reads Reading… while it works.
- Each suggestion appears as a card with a summary, a severity and sometimes a confidence note. Chips show the observations, measurements and nameplate details Walter found.
- Select Use this to add a suggestion to the finding below, or use the dismiss button on the card to discard it. An accepted card shows Added below.
- Continue with your normal save. The page states that nothing is recorded until you save the assessment.
A finding that began as a Walter suggestion and that you confirmed is marked "Drafted by Walter from your notes — you confirmed it", so anyone reading it later can tell where it came from.
Steps: Get Diagnosis
- With findings written and photos added, select Get Diagnosis. The button reads Thinking… while it works.
- A Walter AI Analysis panel appears. It can include a Diagnosis with the issue type and trade, an Assessment, Recommended Parts, Tools Needed and What to do next.
- Each recommended part is labelled with how it stands against your price book and, where you track stock, your inventory.
- If Walter needs more detail, a Walter needs more context note asks a question. Add the answer to your findings and select Get Diagnosis again.
- Under Did Walter help?, choose the thumbs up or thumbs down to rate the answer.
Tips
- More specific notes give better results. "Unit short-cycles, error code, compressor warm to touch" beats "AC not working".
- Treat the analysis as a second opinion. You are the one standing in front of the equipment.
- Parts and next steps are prompts. Check each against what you actually see before you rely on it.
If something goes wrong
- Walter says it did not find anything specific enough to suggest: add more detail to your notes, or fill in the structured fields yourself under Advanced details.
- An error appears under the buttons: try again in a moment. Your notes and photos are still on the page.
- A button is greyed out: Findings detail is empty, or a photo is still uploading.
- If your plan or role does not include a Walter feature, the request reports an error and the rest of the page works normally.
