Improving Estimate Wording with Walter

The two boxes at the top of an estimate, What we found and Recommended work, are shown to the customer above the cost breakdown. They are what justifies the price. Walter can rewrite what you typed so it is clearer and more professional while keeping your facts. This guide shows how to use it and how to undo it.

Before you start

  • Open the estimate you want to change on the Edit Estimate page. The two boxes sit under the heading Diagnosis & Recommended Work.
  • Type something first. Walter rewrites existing text; it does not write from nothing. Each box holds up to 2,000 characters.
  • Each use counts against your plan's monthly Walter allowance. You can check it on the Plan & Usage page.

Steps

  1. In What we found, write the findings in your own words, even roughly. For example, a short list of what you saw.
  2. Select Improve with Walter above that box. The button reads Improving… while Walter works.
  3. The box is replaced with the reworded text, and a line under it says "Improved by Walter — review before saving."
  4. Read it carefully. Edit anything that is wrong or that does not sound like you.
  5. If you prefer your original, select Undo in the line under the box. Your original text returns.
  6. Repeat the same steps for Recommended work.
  7. Select Save Changes at the bottom of the page when you are happy.

What to expect

Walter is told to keep the technical facts and change the style. It still can make mistakes, so check measurements, part names, model numbers and any promise about timing before you save. The rewrite is not saved until you select Save Changes; leaving the page without saving discards it.

The text you see by the customer is exactly what is in the box when you save, so make sure it is something you are comfortable standing behind.

Tips

  • Improve the text before you send the estimate. Once the customer has it, changes mean a revision.
  • If the first rewrite is not quite right, select Undo, adjust your original text to add the missing detail, and try again.
  • Short, specific notes work better than long, rambling ones. Put the most important point first.
  • Use Walter on one box at a time and read the result before moving on.

If something goes wrong

  • "Add some text first, then Walter can improve it." The box is empty. Type something and try again.
  • "Walter couldn't improve this right now. Please try again." The request did not complete. Wait a moment and try again, or keep your own wording.
  • "Walter returned no suggestion." Walter had nothing to offer for that text. Add more detail and try again.
  • "Walter is unavailable right now. Please try again." Try again later. Your text is untouched.
  • Nothing is lost in any of these cases. The box keeps what you typed until a rewrite replaces it, and Undo brings it back.
